Southern Section Cup 2nd Round
AFC Bournemouth (h)
EXETER CITY 1
BOURNEMOUTH 2.
Wednesday, February 1st 1939.
SOUTHERN SECTION CUP TIE AT ST JAMES'S PARK.
This match, for the second round of the Southern Section Cup, should have been played last Wednesday, but had to be put off for a week because of the state of the St James's Park pitch, and in view of the home League match with Brighton at the weekend. It was intended to give Coles a chance with the senior team in this match, but he was unlucky enough to injure his ankle while training, and the position of right half was filled by Bussey.
Exeter City: Church Brown Little Bussey Angus Fellowes Turnbull Riley Bowl Ebdon Liddle
Bournemouth: Bird Marsden Sanaghan
Cook Wilson Twiss Redfern Bright Jones Shaw Lovery
First-time short passing featured the early Exeter attacks in which the right wing was prominent, and when the City raided on the opposite wing Bird only managed to catch a centre dropped in by Liddle at the second attempt. Riley gave Exeter the lead fifteen minutes from the start, when his hard low shot found the net through a crowd of players. He nearly scored again just afterwards, but lifted the ball over the bar from inside the penalty area. Bournemouth were the stronger side after the interval, and Shaw netted for them after Church had punched out from Lovery. Within a minute Exeter threw away a great chance of regaining the lead, Ebdon shooting weakly and straight at Bird from the penalty spot following "hands" by a Bournemouth defender. Then Jones scored Bournemouth's winning goal two minutes from time.
