Match 30
15th February 1939
Walsall (h)

EXETER CITY 3 WALSALL 2. Wednesday, February 15th 1939.

Last of the 3rd Division teams to be dismissed from the Cup and bottom of the Southern Section, Walsall visited Exeter to-day, the possessors of a strangely mixed record.

The following list shows the progress of Walsall, who shocked the football world a few years ago by knocking Arsenal out of
the Cup competition, in this season's ties:

  • 1st round, November 26th, beat Carlisle United (h) 4 1,
  • 2nd round, December 10th, beat Clapton Orient (h) 42,
  • 3rd round, January 7th, beat Newport County (h) 2-0,
  • 4th round, January 21st, drew with Notts County (a) 0 - 0,
  • Replay, January 26th, beat Notts County (h) 40,
  • 5th round, February 11th, lost to Huddersfield (a) 0-3.
The weather was perfect today, but there were fewer than 2,000 spectators when the City opened with a promising movement and almost took the lead twice within the first minute.

Walsall:

In one Walsall attack Angus was seen to fall in a dazed condit ion, and after treatment he resumed at outside right, Turnbull dropping back and Walker going to centre half. Rich, closing in from the left, fired in a terrific shot which Tewkesbury turned aside for a corner, and from the flag kick Bussey shot low into the net for Exeter's first goal. Ebdon shot a second goal for Exeter 23 minutes after the start of the second half and Evans replied for Walsall. Bowl scored Exeter's third and Walsall had a slice of luck when Brown put the ball into his own net in attempting to clear.
