Exeter City:
Dismal conditions and a cold drizzle of rain were accompanied by an icy wind, and the attendance was less than five thousand. Nolan and Moreland scored for the Vale in the first half, Bowl replying for Exeter. For part of the second half Port Vale were reduced to nine men, with Rowe and Nolan both off the field, injured. The City were in the ascendancy now, and a shot by Bowl was headed into the net by Riley. The epidemic of injuries continued, and Riley was the next victim, but he soon resumed. Then, right at the end, Masters, the former Yeovil winger, who was unmarked, gave Church no chance with a low shot from about eight yards' range.
