Match 35
18th March 1939
Crystal Palace (a)

Southern League
Yeovil (h)

Saturday, March 18th 1939.

CRYSTAL PALACE 3
EXETER CITY 2.

CHESTERS STILL A FINE GOALKEEPER.

Exeter City staged a great rally at Selhurst Park today. In the first ten minutes they were two goals down (Wilson and Waldron) and they looked like a side booked for a heavy defeat. They fought back valiantly, however, and for a time overwhelmed the Palace. On a whole a draw would have been a better result. The Palace were largely indebted to Chesters, the former Exeter City goalkeeper, for their winning margin.

Crystal Palace:- Chesters; Owens and F. Dawes; Lievesley, Shanks, and Reece; Steele, Smith, A. Dawes, Waldron, and Wilson.
Exeter City:- Church; Halliday and Little; Walker, Angus, and Fellowes; Rich, Riley, Bowl, Ebdon, and Liddle.
Referee: Mr J.M.Wiltshire, of Sherborne.

Angus played a big part in the City defence, and against the big City pivot Albert Dawes could do nothing. Exeter's forwards played really brilliant football during the last fifteen minutes of the first half and most of the second. Riley was full of enterprise, and was just about the outstanding forward on view. Bowl, scorer of Exeter's two goals, was always the opportunist, while Liddle and Ebdon formed a dangerous wing. Wilson, who scored the Palace's winning goal, was an elusive and brilliant dribbler and a real box of tricks.
