29th March 1939
Ipswich Res. v Exeter City Res

Saturday, March 25th 1939.

EXETER CITY 1 BRISTOL CITY 1.

Exeter City, playing ten men for two spells after the interval, were unfortunate only to draw with Bristol City in the Western Derby at St James's Park this afternoon. Walker had to leave the field with an injury to his forehead and no sooner had the young half-back returned than Rich had to go off with blood streaming from his face. It was when the home ranks were depleted that Booth equalised an earlier goal by Bowl to give his side an undeserved point.

Exeter City:- Church; Halliday and Little; Walker, Angus, and Fellowes; Rich, Riley, Bowl, Ebdon, and Liddle.
Bristol City:- Pearson; Brook and Bridge; Morgan, Roberts, and Armstrong; Peters, Bourton, Rowles, Booth, and Spiring.
Referee:- Mr B.Ames, of Redditch.

It was not a very good match to watch. The light ball on a hard ground was too much for both teams, and many passes went astray. Exeter, however, did far and away the greater share of attacking, and little was seen of the Bristol attack in spite of the fact that Clarence Bourton, once upon a time the most feared centre forward in the Third Division, was a member of it.

Play began in a snowstorm, Exeter opening strongly with wing to wing moves. Jones (Worcester) saved a fierce drive from Pollard at the foot of the post.
Worcester City:- Jones; Shaw, Reece; Trevis, Gibbons, Cottrill; Miles, Bennett, Melaniphy, Kirk, Burns.
Exeter City: Jones; Brown, Clarke; Shadwell, Bamsey, Pollard; Kemp, Turnbull, Mellish, Bussey, Sutherley.

Sutherley was a handful for Shaw, the ex-West Bromwich Albion full-back, and he twice had the home goalkeeper in difficulties with headers from Kemp's centres. Bussey scored for the City after forty-four minutes, and that goal was sufficient to win the game.
