7th April 1939

Clapton Orient v Exeter City

Clapton Orient:- Hall; Taylor and Hearty; Dodgin, Bartlett, and Black; Tully, Williams, Walters, Crawford, and Percy
Exeter City:- Church; Halliday and Little; Walker, Angus, and Fellowes; Riley, Bussey, Bowl, Ebdon, and C.Sutherley.

Bowl (2) and Hearty (through own goal) were Exeter's scorers. Clapton Orient's forward line contained three players who are normally regarded as centre-forwards, and two of them, Walters and Williams, are former Grecians. Williams scored two of the Orient's goals and Walters the other. Exeter took the lead after eleven minutes, when Riley out-paced the defence and passed to Bowl, who drove the ball home as the goalkeeper advanced to meet him. Walters equalised, and several minutes later Williams put the Orient ahead with a penalty kick awarded against Little for hands. Within twenty minutes of the second half three further goals were scored. Exeter drew level when Riley was tripped, and the second penalty of the match was netted by Bowl. Williams flashed a typical cross-shot past Church to regain the advantage for Clapton, but the City were put on terms again when
Hearty turned a centre from Bussey into his own net.
Final Score
Clapton Orient 3-3 Exeter City
