Match 42
15th April 1939
Northampton Town (a)

Southern League
Folkestone (h)

Saturday, April 15th 1932. NORTHAMPTON TOWN 0 EXETER CITY 0.

The City travelled to Northampton with a team which showed two changes from that which won at Southend on Wednesday evening. Brown, who had a twisted knee, was unfit, so Halliday returned to the side. Roy Southcombe was prevented by business calls from making the long journey, and Rich came back for the first time since his injury against Bristol City three weeks ago. A "whip round" by his colleagues and all the staff of the Northampton Town club is one of the moves being made to provide help for S.Russell, the Cobblers' full-back, who has had his right leg amputated following an accident in the match with Southend United last Saturday. Mr David Jack, the Southend manager, has written to Northampton Town expressing the sympathy of the Southend club, directors, players, and supporters, and offering to help in any scheme for Russell's aid. Russell is at present in the Southend General Hospital, and is said to have passed a very comfortable night. Exeter City, who have won only one match at Northampton since the war, were hoping to break the spell today.

Northampton:- Clifford; McCullough and O'Rourke; Blunt, Thayne, and Postlethwaite; King, Jennings, Hurel, Ellwood, and Barron.
Exeter City:- Church; Halliday and Little; Walker, Angus, and Fellowes; Rich, Riley, Bowl, Ebdon, and C.Sutherley.

Little and Riley were on Northampton's books last season, and were given a round of applause by a crowd of about 6,000. Northampton won the toss and Exeter faced a blustery breeze in the opening half.
A FAIR RESULT.
The result, a goalless draw, was fair to both teams, for there was a similarity between the sides in that each possessed sound defenders and steady half-backs. A light ball and a strong wind hindered the attacks. In rather a moderate Exeter forward line Riley and Bowl were the pick. Angus was brilliant in the City half-back line, and though the Cobblers made great efforts to score Church never faltered.
