Match 44

Queens Park Rangers (h)

Southern League
Dartford (a)

3rd May 1939
Exhibition match at Bideford
Exeter City v Torquay United

Saturday, April 29th 1939.

EXETER CITY 1
QUEEN'S PARK RANGERS 1.

For this, their last home Football League match of the season, the City were strengthened by the return of Riley, who having recovered from the indisposition which kept him out of the side a week ago, resumed in his accustomed position of inside right. Rich is now under doctor's orders, and Roy Southcombe, playing for Bideford in an important cup match, was not available, so Turnbull, who has never let the City down, was reintroduced on the right wing. The broadcast of the F. A. Cup Final from Wembley Stadium had an adverse effect on the attendance, which was barely 3,000. Fellowes won the toss and Exeter lined up at the St James's Road end in the opening half. Neither side was dangerous in the early stages, and the first real threat came from the Rangers, who advanced on the left to be cleverly checked by Halliday. Riley completed the clearance and when the City attacked Ridyard passed back to Allen. A ball that bounced somewhat awkwardly was safely held by the 'keeper. The first shot of the match was a high one by Riley, which Allen jumped to and saved, and for a time the City were slightly the more aggressive side.

Exeter City:- Church; Halliday and Little; Walker, Angus, and Fellowes; Turnbull, Riley, Bowl, Ebdon, and C.Sutherley.
Rangers:- Allen; Smith and Jefferson;
Powell, Ridyard, and Lowe; McEwan, Mallett, Stock, Fitzgerald, and Pattison.
Referee:- Mr G.V.Searle, of Salisbury.

Exeter City's last home match of the season ended in a draw of one one, but the visitors were a shade fortunate to get away with a point. In addition to missing a penalty (Bowl hit the upright) the City should have had another, when in the last few minutes Turnbull was glaringly tripped only a yard or two from goal. The match was a mixture of exciting football, flashes of clever and fast play and dull periods. Sutherley scored Exeter's goal early in the second half to level the scores. Stock had given the Rangers the lead during the last few minutes of the opening half.

DARTFORD 0
EXETER CITY RESERVES 0
.

Exeter City Reserves wound up their away fixtures with a visit to Dartford, where the attendance was only 250, the smallest of the season. Bussey gave the Exeter attack a lot of dash, and Clarke was a lively and enterprising centre-forward. The City were unlucky to have a goal disallowed after Mellish had netted following a clever movement started by Bussey.

Bamsey, who always got the better of his duels with Ewers, did splendid work in holding up the Dartford attack. With a greater amount of accuracy in shooting Exeter would have won easily.
Team:- Blore; Brown, Barnes; Shadwell, Bamsey, Coles; Branton, Mellish, Clarke, Bussey, and Morrish.

EXETER CITY V TORQUAY UNITED. Exhibition match at Bideford.
Wednesday, May 3rd 1939
.

There was a large attendance Hansen Ground, Bideford, where the City played Torquay United in a special exhibition match. at the The word "exhibition" describes the game in a nutshell. There

was much fanciful pattern weaving by both sides, but a dearth

of thrills, players at no time exerting themselves unduly and

showing considerable slackness in front of goal. Bowl opened the scoring for the City, and after Brown had missed a "sitter" for Torquay that player equalised by neatly turning the ball into the net from a corner kick by James. Fursdon then developed cartilage trouble and had to retire.

Second Half.

Though playing only ten men in the second half Torquay had just as much of the play as Exeter and in fact took the lead through Cothliff.

The best goal of the game was then scored by Roy Southcombe, of

Bideford, who closed in from the left wing to drive a terrific

shot into the top of the net. Jones was beaten pointless.

Altogether it was intricate but uninspiring football. The final

score was Exeter City 2 Torquay United 2.
