Match 45
6th May 1939
Mansfield Town (a)

Southern League
Cheltenham (h)

Saturday, May 6th 1939

MANSFIELD TOWN 4 EXETER CITY 2.

There was no great interest in Exeter City's last match of the season, at Mansfield. Both clubs were safe from worries about re-election, and with nothing vital at stake there was only a very moderate attendance. The City, who have done well on the Mansfield ground on the few occasions they have played there travelled yesterday. The team was unchanged from last week. George Stimpson, the old City player, was at left-back in the Mansfield team. In delightful weather Exeter kicked off but the first attack came from Mansfield on their right wing, but from about ten yards out and right in front of the posts the ball was ballooned high over the bar by Barke. Sutherley's solo dribble was checked by Harkin, then Turnbull forced a corner, the flag kick being fisted clear by Hughes. After eleven minutes Exeter scored through Bowl, the Mansfield defence being badly at fault. Dutton equalised and Harkin put Mansfield ahead. There was but a minute to the interval but it was time enough for Harry Bowl to score his second goal of the match. Flowers obtained Mansfield's third goal after 65 minutes, and Dutton the fourth five minutes before the finish.
