Even exchanges featured the start of Exeter City's first competition match since 1939, and early play though keen was below the standard expected. The pitch was treacherous following heavy rain and thunderstorms, and Swindon developed numerous dangerous thrusts on the right. Jakeman (Wolves) was a constant menace. Swindon were more and more in the ascendancy as the game progressed, and were unlucky when a powerful drive by Williams struck the upright. Jakeman scored for the Railwaymen after 30 minutes. Directly from the kick-off in the second half Exeter drew level. Ebdon tapped the ball to Wardle, who weaved his way past two opponents before returning it to the middle. The Town defence was badly out of position and Ebdon passed to the unmarked Mitcheson, who advanced a yard or two and coolly shot into the net from about six yards. The City's best players were Goodfellow, Murray,Wardle and Ebdon. Jakeman was the "star" of the Swindon team.
