NOT A WEAK PERFORMANCE. CITY DRAW WITH A CLEVER READING TEAM.
Saturday, September 15th 1945.
READING 1 (Edelston) ...
EXETER CITY 1 (Challis)
Attendance 6,000.
Referee:- Mr F.J.Lowe, of Bristol.
Half-time score:- Reading 1 City 1.
Reading: Duke; G.S.Fisher, Purvis; Busby, Niblett, Layton; F.Fisher, Edelston, McPhee, Day, Chitty.
Exeter City:- Goodfellow; Murray, Brown; Walker, Blood, Latham; Challis, Wardle, Ebdon, Mitcheson, Lewis.
Maurice Edelston headed through to give Reading the lead, Challis equalising, also with a header. Exeter's draw at Reading was no mean performance. Reading fielded a stronger and cleverer team than they did at Exeter with Edelston and Matt Busby (Liverpool) lending distinction and class to the forward and half back lines. Exeter nearly won the match ten minutes from the end, Lewis breaking
through and crashing a hefty shot against the goalpost with the home goalkeeper beaten. Ebdon shot wide from the rebound.
