Match 11
20th October 1945
Bournemouth (a)

EXETER CITY'S NEW MANAGER. MR GEORGE ROUGHTON OF MANCHESTER APPOINTED.

At the annual meeting held at St. James's Park on Wednesday last, October 17th 1945, Mr George Roughton was appointed to be the new manager of Exeter City. He succeeds Mr Jack English, who returned to Darlington last August.
Mr Roughton, who was born in Manchester, became a professional with Huddersfield Town in 1928 and in 1936 was transferred to Manchester United. He was captain of that club and played in representative and inter-League matches and in two International trials. He was also a member of the F. A. Party (whose number included Harold Houghton of Exeter City) which toured Canada in the summer of 1931.

CITY AN INFERIOR TEAM. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20TH 1945.

Bournemouth and Boscombe 3 (Thomas 2, Cothliff)
Exeter City 1 (Ebdon)
Attendance 6,151.

Referee:- Mr G.Hann, of Glastonbury. Half-time score:- Boscombe 2 City 0.

Exeter City were the inferior of two poor teams at Dean Court. The result emphasised Exeter's weakness rather than Boscombe's strength. The game in fact fell a long way below the accustomed 3rd Division level. There was no redeeming feature about the City's performance. It was their worst since they returned to League football this season. The forwards were unimpressive except for Bert Bowden, the ex Ladysmith Road schoolboy footballer, and Dick Ebdon. The half back line was average as long as Walker and Jordan stayed in position on the flanks, but these two frequently wandered into the middle circle, an old Exeter City fault, so it seems. Roughton, who is now the club's manager, was the best full-back on view. Ebdon scored Exeter's goal late in the game when the side was three goals down and facing a hopeless task.

City team:- Goodfellow; Murray, Roughton; Walker, Blood, Jordan; Challis, Bowden, Ebdon, Haddington, and Sutherley.
