BEST MATCH OF THE SEASON SO FAR. EXETER CITY RECOVER THEIR STYLE.

Saturday, November 3rd 1945.

EXETER CITY 3 (Kernick, Walker 2) CARDIFF CITY 2  (Gibson, Clarke)
Half-time score:- City 2 Cardiff 0.
Attendance 9,484.

Referee:- Mr W.T.Strainge, of Bristol.

Exeter City:- Goodfellow; Murray, Roughton; Gallagher, Jordan, Blood; Tickell, Wardle, Walker, Kernick, Challis. Cardiff City:- McLaughlin; Lever, Phillips; Hollyman, Stansfield, Baker; Gibson, Carless, Rees, Moore, Clarke.

For thrills and excitement, enthusiasm, and speed, determination and team-work, the match between the two Cities was one of the best seen at St. James's Park for many years, and certainly the best one this season. Exeter City, with a side which improved as the game progressed, were in fine fettle, and they battled on to win a fine victory over the youthful leaders of the South of Thames Section of Division Three. Walker proved his worth as a centre-forward. He looked a born leader, was a constant menace to the Welsh defence, and was ever ready to try a crack at goal. Nevertheless, the City's "number one" forward was George Wardle, an attacker who had class and method in everything he did. It was very fitting that these two players shared in the getting of the winning goal, scored by Walker ten minutes from time.
