No game is decided until the final whistle, and the truth of the old saying was proved again at St. James's Park, when Exeter City won by a goal to nil.
With less than a minute to go a quick inter-passing movement by the home right wing caught the Bristol defenders on the wrong foot. Ebdon moved into the open space to meet the ball as it was lobbed in side by Tickell. Guy came across at top speed but a yard too late and tackled Ebdon from behind. The City leader, half pushed, and half tripped, fell headlong twelve yards from the visiting goal. Without hesitation the referee pointed to the penalty spot, and Challis put the ball past Fairhurst and into the net to give Exeter a victory which looked beyond the scope of their attainment at the interval.
