Match 18
8th December 1945
FA Cup R2 1st Leg
Newport County (a)
SECOND ROUND OF THE CUP. EXETER CITY'S MISFORTUNES.
Saturday, December 8th 1945.
NEWPORT COUNTY 5 (Wookey, Derrick 2, Brinton, Carr)
EXETER CITY 1 (Gallagher)
Half-time score:- Newport 1 City 1
Attendance 4,000.
Newport County:- Ferguson; Avery, Thomas; Owen, Low, Brinton; Wookey, Boatwright, Derrick, Hydes, Carr.
Referee:- Mr T.Wright, of Bristol.
Exeter City:- Thomson; Murray, Roughton; Gallagher, Blood, Angus; Tickell, Wardle, Ebdon, Walker, Challis.
Bill Jordan developed a temperature an hour before the kick-off at Newport and Gallagher took his place at right half. Another misfortune occurred on the field ten minutes before half-time when Thomson, going out to meet the ball, was accidentally kicked on the head and knee. He limped along on the left wing until the interval, and when he resumed his normal position in the second half he played a plucky and gallant game under a severe handicap.
NOT FOUR GOALS DIFFERENCE.
The first goal was scored by Wookey for Newport from a penalty for hands by Blood. Shortly after this Ebdon scored for Exeter but the point was not allowed on account of an infringement that was not clear to anyone but the referee. There was not four goals difference between the teams on the day's play. Newport County were a burly side, below Second Division grade on this showing, and their methods were rough and ready. Nevertheless, with a four goals advantage it looks as though they will reach the third round of the Cup at Exeter's expense.
