Exeter City are out of the Cup. They lost to Newport County by an aggregate score of eight goals to two, but the heavy margin flatters the conquering side. The City should never have lost the first game by as many goals as they did. They were similarly unlucky to be defeated by 3 to 1 at St. James's Park. In a lot of respects the two clashes ran on parallel lines. The City forwards made early bids to wipe off the four goals deficit that was accumulated at Somerton Park. The effort failed. Then came a shock when Hydes scored a brilliant goal to give Newport the lead in this game. A second goal by Newport was followed by the City's lone success just before half time, when Crawshaw headed through from Roughton's free kick. Subsequent pressure by Exeter promised much, but the fulfilment never came. There were times in the second half when the home forwards did everything but score. Two goals were disallowed and on two occasions the crossbar was hit. When Hydes weighed in with the third Newport goal late in the proceedings the light went out altogether for the Grecians.
