Match 22
25th December 1945
Torquay United (a)
Torquay United 3-1 ECFC
Scorers: Mitcheson
Attendance: 4000
On Christmas Day the City were beaten at Plainmoor by three goals to one. From the Grecians' standpoint it was a very poor performance all round. The forward line, with the sole exception of Mitcheson, who scored Exeter's goal, was inept and never looked likely to increase their score.
DELIGHTED SUPPORTERS
United delighted their supporters by beating Exeter City 3-1 in the match at Plainmoor on the morning of Christmas Day, for not only did it mean two valuable League points, but it was a well-earned victory over old rivals. Play in the first half was not spectacular, the Exeter forward line working better together than the United's Before the interval Mitcheson netted for the City and Griffiths for the United.
In the second half Torquay became very persistent, and it was only on isolated occasions that play shifted to the Torquay end. The homesters' further goals came from Kernick and Griffiths. United attack was cleverly led by Tony Harris, of Queen's Park, a Scottish international.
The attendance was about 4,000.
