Match 23
26th December 1945
Torquay United (h)
BOXING DAY.
EXETER CITY v TORQUAY
Inability to act quickly was Exeter City's cardinal fault in the Boxing Day game at St. James's Park, watched by a crowd of 9,387 spectators.
The Exeter side was woefully lacking in constructive ideas with but few exceptions. The persistence with which many home players adhered to their close passing tactics on the waterlogged ground courted disaster, and the City got it. Too slow in nearly every position the City looked a very bad side, deficient in stamina, determination, and directness. These qualities were essential on such an afternoon and Torquay possessed them to a much greater degree than Exeter. In a City attack which was uninspiring to say the least, Wardle again stood out, but his brilliant work was wasted by unresponsive and slow thinking colleagues on both wings. Torquay's goals were obtained by Griffiths and Kernick.
Exeter City was represented by Thomson; Topham and Roughton; Jordan, Blood, and Haddock; Perkins, Wardle, Bowden, Walker, and Ebdon.
