Match 29
9th February 1946
Bristol City (h)

EXETER SIGN HYDES FROM NEWPORT COUNTY.

BUT EBDON THE BEST FORWARD AT ST. JAMES'S PARK.

Saturday, February 9th 1946.

  • Arthur Hydes, who played centre forward for Leeds United in a well remembered F. A. Cup-tie at St. James's Park fifteen years ago and later moved to Newport County, was yesterday transferred to Exeter City. In his first game for the City today he was useful, but not outstanding, and in fact Ebdon, who played centre forward with the newcomer on his right, was the best forward.

EXETER CITY 3  (Walker, Ebdon 2)
BRISTOL CITY 0
Half-time score:- Exeter 1 Bristol 0.

Attendance 8,000.

Exeter City:- Singleton; Murray, Blood; Jordan, Coles, Angus; Wardle, Hydes, Ebdon, Walker, Regan
Referee:- Mr Hawn.
Bristol City:- Cousins; Guy, Bailey; Carter, Roberts, Thomas; Chilcott, Sperrings, Curran, Williams, Hargreaves.

This was a good game in spite of a relatively dull period in the second half.
Exeter scored three goals, but the crossbar and uprights on three occasions denied the Bristol forwards a goal. Ebdon played his best game since his injury at Bournemouth, last October. He was the menacing and fleet-footed raider of old. He was a dashing, persistent, and skilful leader of the forward line, with a damaging shot in either foot, and ready at all times for one of his typical bursts through the middle or down either flank. An incident between Walker and Williams just before half time ended in both men being ordered off the field."
