Brighton & Hove Albion (h)
GOALLESS DRAW AT ST. JAMES'S PARK. FORWARD FAILINGS ON BOTH SIDES.
Saturday, February 23rd 1946.
EXETER CITY 0
BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION 0.
Attendance 6,783.
Exeter City:- Singleton; Murray, Gadsby; Jordan, Coles, Angus; Tickell, Wardle, Ebdon, Walker, Harris.
Brighton:- Baldwin; Green, Watson;
Wilson, Longdon, Whent; Moore, Philbin, Hassell, Martindale, Willemse.
Neither side could complain about the result of this match. Each got a point and deserved no more from a goalless struggle which told of many forward failings. A penetrative forward with a reasonably good shot could have won the match for either side. It was a contest of missed chances, few thrills, and much inaccurate football. The high wind and light ball accounted for some of the errors but not all. In general it was the poorest and least interesting game played at the Park this season.
TWO GUESTS IN CITY'S TEAM.
For most of the game Exeter were a team without method, thrust, or cohesion. Brighton were no better, although they had the City on the run for a long period in the second half. Twice Longdon was left in easy scoring positions with a gaping goal before him, but each time blazed his shot too wide and too high. Wilson of Brighton was easily the best player on view. In the Exeter team Gadsby (Leeds United) was adequate in defence, and Coles held the middle of the Brighton vanguard satisfactorily. Exeter City fielded two "guest" players, Gadsby, mentioned above, and Vic Harris, of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
