Match 32
2nd March 1946
Brighton & Hove Albion (a)
TWICE IN ARREARS CITY FIGHT BACK.
GAME AT BRIGHTON PLAYED IN A SNOW BLIZZARD.
Saturday, March 2nd 1946.
BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION 2 (Davie, Stephens)
EXETER CITY 2 (Ebdon, Walker)
Half-time score:- Brighton 1 City 1. Attendance 3,000.
Exeter City showed at Brighton a quality which has been missing all too often this season, the ability and will to fight back. Twice in arrears, they rallied each time, and in the end they were well worth their point. The game was keenly contested in a blinding snowstorm. Under these conditions the players of both sides can take credit for a grand display of football. While Brighton were slightly more polished Exeter's long passing and good use of the ball were rightly and profitably employed. Both the City wingers were brought into action frequently, and Tickell was a constant source of danger to the home defence.
Exeter's defence proved equal to all demands, particularly in the first half, when Brighton, with a strong wind behind them, did the majority of the attacking. The first goal was scored by Davie after 15 minutes and equalised shortly afterwards by Ebdon. Exeter's second equaliser, by Walker, was netted from the penalty spot.
Brighton:- Baldwin; Green, Watson; Wilson, Longdon, Whent; Moore,
Philbin, Hassell, Martindale, Willemse. Exeter City:- Singleton; Murray, Gadsby; Jordan, Coles, Angus; Tickell, Wardle, Ebdon, Walker, Hydes.
