Highlighting Exeter City's triumph over Bournemouth, the leaders of the section, at St. James's Park, was Dick Ebdon's "hat trick." Three beautiful goals, they were scored within the first 20 minutes of the second half, and they set the seal on the brightest spell of attacking football Exeter have played this season. The first of Ebdon's winners was the outcome of a measured pass from Eastham to Challis and then a studied low centre from the latter. Diving almost horizontally, Ebdon met the ball forcefully with his head, directing it into the bottom corner of the net, and injuring himself in the process. This was two minutes after the change over. Wilson failed utterly to match the energy and purpose of the Exeter leader, for whom the match was a personal triumph. Ebdon headed his second goal from near the penalty spot as Bird came out to meet the bouncing ball, and shot his third over the goalkeeper's head and hard into the top of the rigging.
