Ebdon's smartly taken goal, the only score of the match, gave the City a deserved win over Northampton at St James's Park. Ebdon owed his chance to a through pass from Walker, and the goal was his reward for quick thinking. It was scored after half an hour's play. It was not a great game, but it did however contain some interesting phases, and the onlookers must have been impressed with the skilful play of Wardle and Smith, the two inside-rights, also by the clever and cool defensive work of Hanford and Smalley. Jones had a busy evening in the Northampton goal, and he thoroughly merited the cheers which a sporting crowd accorded him at the close of the game.
