CITY'S GALLANT FIGHT WITHOUT LUCK.
RECORD CROWD AT SWINDON.

Saturday, September 21st 1946.
SWINDON TOWN 2 (J.W.Stephens, A.Stephens)
EXETER CITY 0
Half-time: Swindon 2 City 0.

Swindon:- Boulton; Young, Trim; Lloyd, Ithell, Bingham; Denyer, Lucas, J.W.Stephens, A.Stephens, Edwards. City: Singleton; Thompson, Coles; Cutting, Hanford, Walker; Mustard, Wardle, Ebdon, Vaughan, Regan.

Attendance 20,831.

Three reasons why this match will get a mention in the record books are (1) the attendance was Swindon Town's highest-ever at home for a League game, (2) there was not a single offside decision throughout, and (3) the scorers of the two goals were twins, A. and J.Stephens. The official attendance of 20,831 broke a record which has stood for twenty years, the previous best being 20,057 at the Swindon Town v. Bristol City match in October 1926. Enthusiasm for Swindon's football team locally is amazing, and there has been nothing like it before, not even in the far-off days of Jock Walker and Harold Fleming, when those two international players were the brightest stars of a side which dazzled all opposition, and, for pure football that side was a grade above the prevailing level of the 3rd Division. Exeter were decisively beaten but did well to hold the home team to a two goal margin with Walker injured and off the field after play had been in progress for about 30 minutes. With Wardle at left half in a reshuffled team the City put up a gallant fight without any luck. Thompson and Coles were outstanding in defence, and Hanford played a splendid game at centre half.
