Exeter City must show more enterprise and energy if they are going to win any more matches away from home. The form produced today at Reading was, as the score indicates, four goals worse than the home side. Exeter had weaknesses in every department except goal. Too many of their players played as though resigned to an inevitable defeat. On Tuesday Exeter City completed the signing of two new players from Newport County. They are William Maurice Owen, formerly a centre forward but now a wing half, and Norman Trevor Granville, an inside or wing forward. Although the new men did as well as could be expected of them in their first match they shared in the general Exeter decline, and failed to halt Reading's advance. Owen assisted Northwich Victoria, Manchester City, and Tranmere Rovers mainly as a centre forward prior to joining Newport in 1938. Granville was transferred to Newport last season from Cliftonville of the Irish League.
