CITY'S SECOND HALF RALLY WAS NOTICEABLE. WALSALL HELD AFTER SCORING TWO GOALS.

Saturday, November 2nd 1946.
EXETER CITY 2 (Ebdon 2)
WALSALL 2  (Maund 2)
Half-time: City 0 Walsall 1.

City: Hoyle; Cutting, Haddock; Owen, Coles, Fellowes; Mustard, Wardle, Ebdon, Wright, Regan.
Walsall:- Lewis; Methley, Skidmore; Crutchley, Foulkes, Newman; Maund, Talbot, Mullard, Wilshaw, Davies. Attendance 9,102, receipts £722. 9s.6d.

Different from every previous match at St James's Park in that the City staged a rousing rally instead of fading out after the interval, the game against Walsall had its satisfying phases, and the result, a draw, did neither side an injustice. Walsall, quick on the ball, were a lively attacking force before the interval, with Talbot the master-mind behind most of their forward movements and Davies and Maund speedy raiders on the wings. The Saddlers were two goals ahead early in the second half, but from then on the initiative was unmistakeably Exeter's. Refusing to accept defeat the City were transformed from a somewhat unimpressive slow side into a determined formation which attacked almost non-stop in the last half hour.

HULLETT A POWERFUL BUT LUCKLESS MARKSMAN. CITY RESERVES AND MERTHYR DRAW A SOUTHERN LEAGUE CUP TIE.
Wednesday, November 6th 1946.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 1 (Murray) MERTHYR TYDFIL 1  (Powell)
Half time City Reserves O Merthyr 1.

City Reserves:- Hoyle; Long, Blood; Murray, Coles, Fellowes; Windle, Granville, Smart, Vaughan, Challis.

Merthyr:- Parsons; Avery, Pugh; Davies, Allen, Fursland; Thomas, Raybould, Hullett, Powell, Simpson.

Attendance 4,000.

Hullett, the former Plymouth Argyle centre-forward, is far and away too good for Southern League football. Playing for Merthyr against the City Reserves at St James's Park today in the Southern League Cup competition he showed masterly touches, led the forward line
brilliantly, and was a powerful but luckless marksman. Three times in the first half Hullett hit the framework of Exeter's goal. Each time the ball cannoned back into play as powerful shots struck the crossbar and both uprights. The result, a draw of one goal each, is flattering to Exeter City Reserves, who were badly overplayed in the first half by the youthful Welsh team. Powell gave Merthyr the lead with an unexpected shot from the edge of the penalty area, and it was not until late in the game that Murray equalised the score with a first-time drive into the top corner of the visitors' net. Exeter were yards too slow in most positions and there was little or no semblance of teamwork.
