BOURNEMOUTH CUP TIE WAS A ROUGH AFFAIR. SPECTATOR INVADES THE FIELD.

Saturday, November 30th 1946.
BOURNEMOUTH 4 (Paton, Kirkham, Gallacher, Tunnicliffe)
EXETER CITY 2 (Regan, Hydes)
Half-time Boscombe 0 City 2.

Bournemouth & Boscombe:- Bird; Marsden, Sanaghan; Gallacher, Wilson, Woodward; Tunnicliffe, Paton, Kirkham, Tagg, Macdonald.
Referee:- Mr Gunning.
Exeter City: Singleton; Thompson, Blood; Cutting, Hanford, Walker; Wardle, Hydes, Owen, Wright, Regan.

Attendance 15,000.

Exeter City were knocked out of the Cup (literally) in an amazing match at Dean Court, Boscombe, after scoring first and leading by two goals at the interval. They were then bundled out of the competition in a rough and tumble second half in which Bournemouth scored four goals, two of which, as well as a doubtful penalty against Hanford, never ought to have been allowed. In every aspect the control of the game was below standard, glaring fouls passing unchecked. It took several policemen and the two club trainers to restore order when a spectator invaded the field and made towards Thompson in a threatening manner. All the heart went out of the Exeter team when, with the scores level at two goals each Regan had one disallowed for no obvious reason. Then followed the penalty, converted by Kirkham, and the tie was won and lost before Paton netted Boscombe's final goal just before the finish.

  • JACK ENGLISH LEAVES.
It is understood that Mr Jack English, the City's former manager, has resigned his position at Darlington F.C.

TWO LOCAL AMATEURS IN CITY RESERVES TEAM. PEARCE OF BROADCLYST AND HINE OF EXETER.

Wednesday, December 4th 1946.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 1 (Jones)

MILLWALL RESERVES 1 (Anderson)

Half-time City 0 Millwall 1.

Millwall Reserves, who have to play all their Southern League matches in mid-week this season, brought a strong side to St. James's Park, where they opposed Exeter City Reserves this afternoon. The City gave trials to two local amateurs. The players are Pearce, right-back, of Broadclyst, and N.Hine, a left half who plays for one of the Exeter junior teams.

City Reserves:- Hoyle; T.B. Pearce, Long; Fellowes, Coles, N.Hine; Windle, Granville, Lancaster, Vaughan, Jones.

When the City Reserves failed to accept a gift chance five minutes from the end of the game the odds were greatly on another defeat at home. Millwall Reserves were leading by a goal to nothing, Anderson having scored in the first half, when Vaughan gave Jones a grand opportunity which he squandered by lofting the ball over a gaping net. Jones atoned for his error, however, and with practically the last kick of the match scored with a close range shot when the visiting defenders had stopped to appeal for offside.
