Exeter City had to battle against the odds at Southend. Handicapped by a second half injury to Owen but defending doggedly they held the lead until the last few minutes. Taking the play throughout a draw of two goals each was, however, a fair reflection. In the early stages the home side had Exeter bewildered by their fast and accurate passing, but as the ground turned into a mud-heap the City adapted themselves to the conditions while Southend persisted in the short passing game which nearly proved their undoing. The City forwards were not always working together, but on a ground of this sort anything was possible, and what at one stage appeared the impossible turned into reality.
