Farcical football was witnessed at Mansfield, where Exeter City were beaten by one goal to none. On a ground covered with a thick frost the ball played many tricks. Players were unable to obtain a foothold on the slippery surface and it was only after three inspections of the pitch had been made by the referee that the game was started. Accurate play was impossible, and at no time was the contest a fair or reliable test of the merits of the rival teams. Wardle, whose ball control was brilliant in these conditions, was the game's outstanding player by a long chalk.
