QUICKER TORQUAY MERITED THEIR WIN.

CONTRASTING STYLES OF FOOTBALL IN DEVON DERBY.

Saturday, December 28th 1946.

TORQUAY UNITED 2 (Phillips, Conley)
EXETER CITY 1 (Head own goal)
Half-time Torquay 1 City 1.

Torquay:- Matier; Keeton, Calland; Towers, Head, Coley; Phillips, Harrower, Conley, Cothliff, Mercer.
Referee:- Mr J.M.Wiltshire, of Sherborne.

Exeter City: Singleton; Thompson, Blood; Cutting, Hanford, Walker; Granville, Fellowes, Owen, Wright, Regan.

Attendance 11,000.

Apart from a dull phase midway through the first half, and another drab spell when both teams tired towards the end, this Devon Derby was an entertaining struggle between teams which exploited contrasting styles of football. The City were deliberate and clever when they had the time and space. Torquay were not so polished, but they made better use of the first time pass, and so were quicker on the ball and more direct in their methods. Phillips gave the Magpies the lead from a low centre swept across the face of the Exeter goal by Mercer. Head deflected a cross from Regan into his own net to level the score. A quarter of an hour from the end Conley headed a magnificent goal, the centre again being supplied by Mercer.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE MATCH AT ST JAMES'S PARK.

28th December 1946

City Reserves 1 (Smart) 1;
Merthyr Tydfil 7 (Hullett 4, Powell, Thomas, Howarth)

Merthyr Tydfil scored a runaway victory in their Southern League game with Exeter City Reserves at Exeter netting five goals in a hectic 15 minutes in the second half.

The final score of seven goals to one did not exaggerate Merthyr's superiority, for they were a fast, well-knit and enterprising team who made Exeter look slow and cumbersome.

Hullett, who scored four goals, was a danger man in the Merthyr attack, for he always positioned himself correctly to receive his colleagues' passes. Other goals were scored by Powell, Thomas and Howarth. In defence Merthyr were grandly served. Smart scorea Exeter's goal early in the second half.
