Southern League
Gloucester (a)

Exeter City v Port Vale

Saturday, January 4th 1947.
Exeter City (Owen) 1
Port Vale (Jones) 1.

3rd Division South, attendance 9,000.

City: Singleton; Thompson, Blood; Cutting, Hanford, Walker; Granville, Wardle, Owen, Wright, Regan.
Vale: Heppell; Smith, Pursell; Todd, Cheadle, Hallam; Triner, Prince, Pointon, Jones, Bellis.

On the evidence of this match Port Vale are the best side so far to be seen at Exeter this season, even better than Bristol City. The Valiants were fast, clever, and thrustful, yet at the same time a methodical team without a real weakness. The City, despite leading at the interval, were flattered by their point, and the defence was almost carried by one man, Singleton. Exeter's custodian gave a faultless performance, safe at all times, and daring when the occasion demanded. In other words, Singleton is a top class goalkeeper. The initiative was with Exeter before the interval, but a difference came over the game in the second half when Port Vale were masters for long periods. Their fast raiding forwards showed the majority of the City defenders to be lacking in pace and without much strength in the tackle.
