TACTICAL ERRORS FATAL TO EXETER'S CAUSE.

BALL KEPT TOO CLOSE IN THE MUD AT LEYTON.

Saturday, January 11th 1947.

LEYTON ORIENT 3 (Baynham, Morrad, Hunt)
EXETER CITY 1 (Regan)
Half-time Orient 2 City 0.

Leyton:- Tolliday; Fullbrook, Ritson; Bacon, Bartlett, Ballard; Roberts, Hunt, Morrad, Pullen, Baynham.
City: Singleton; Thompson, Blood; Cutting, Hanford, Walker; Granville, Wright, Owen, Vaughan, Regan.

Tactical errors were fatal to Exeter City's cause at Leyton where they were beaten by 3 goals to 1. The visiting side persisted in close passing methods on a playing surface which was ankle deep in mud in most places. The conditions demanded that attacks should be of the open order and that the ball should be kept moving freely. The City paid insufficient heed, and so contributed to their own downfall. The best player in the Exeter ranks was Singleton, who repeatedly saved his side when all seemed lost. Granville and Wright formed the stronger wing of the attack, because Vaughan, who was introduced at inside left, could only contribute a certain cleverness on a ground which was totally unsuitable to a man of his slight build. More thrust and less finesse could probably have saved the City a point.
