Seven thousand hardy football enthusiasts who braved the blizzard and shivered on the wide open spaces that surround Selhurst Park were rewarded for their pluck. They saw an evenly contested game, a struggle featured by a standard of performance surprisingly high under the arctic conditions which prevailed. Snow carpeted the playing pitch to a depth of a couple of inches. The players slid and slipped on the ice, and everything was against good football, yet there were numerous well planed attacking moves, a lot of clever midfield play, and brilliant work by the respective defences. A match above 3rd Division average ended in an unlucky de feat for the City by the only goal, scored by Mycock four minutes after the change of ends.

Exeter Reserves No Match For Gillingham

Gillingham, the best Southern League side seen at Exeter this season, fully deserved their 6-0 win over the City Reserves at St. James' Park, even though the City were handicapped in the closing stages by an injury to their right-back, Pearce. Clever in approach play, and, in the second half, deadly in finishing, Gillingham impressed as the equals of many Third Division sides. They had a brilliant inside trio in Wilson (who scored three), Briggs, and Russell. Briggs got two goals and Russell one. But for the fine display of J. Muirhead, making his début in the Exeter goal, the lively Gillingham attackers would have scored many more goals. Exeter were lively in approach play, but lacked speed and ideas in finishing.

Team:- J.Muirhead; T.B.Pearce, Staddon; Rowe, Angus, Long; Hutchings, Lee, Holman, Vaughan, and Trousdale.
