EXETER CITY V QUEEN'S PARK RANGERS

MATCH PLAYED AT LAST. PERSISTENT GRECIANS REWARDED BY LATE GOALS

Wednesday, March 5th 1947.

EXETER CITY 3 (Cutting, Wright, Walker) QUEEN'S PARK RANGERS 0
Half-time: City 0 Rangers 0.

City: Hoyle; Thompson, Blood; Cutting, Hanford, Walker; Mustard, Wardle, Ebdon, Wright, Regan.
Referee:- Mr H.F.Hauxwell of West Wickham.
Rangers:- Allen; Dudley, Jefferson; Blizzard, Powell, Chapman; McEwan, Parkinson, Durrant, Mills, Pattison.

Attendance 5,000.

The four-times postponed City v Rangers match faced what looked to be another postponement, with the pitch at St James's Park under a couple of inches of water in some places. Heavy rain converted the surface into a morass of mud, but four inches underneath the ground was bone hard and frostbound. Exeter City were the superior tacticians, and correctly employed the long kicking method in preference to the short passing game. The wisdom of the City's tactics was borne out by the result, which was a victory by 3 goals to none. The first goal, by Cutting, came from a free kick after Allen had handled outside the penalty area. Walker's kick was flicked into the net by Cutting, the ball being deflected out of the goalkeeper's reach by a defender's head. That was 20 minutes from the end. Then a high centre from Ebdon was only partially cleared to Wright, who shot first-time into an empty net for Exeter's second goal. The next goal was scored by Walker direct from a free kick awarded when Ebdon was fouled.

OUTSTANDING FIXTURES PILING UP. WEATHER CAUSES MORE CANCELLATIONS.
Saturday, March 8th 1947.

Walsall v Exeter City.
With no sign of a break in the weather the football fixtures still to be played are piling up week after week. The City's League match at Walsall was cancelled at midday yesterday after earlier reports had spoken of three to four feet snowdrifts on the pitch.

Southern League Cup-tie at Huish.

YEOVIL TOWN 8 (Hartburn 2, Doyle 2, Mitcheson 2, Stock, Marshall)
EXETER CITY RESERVES 3  (Challis 2, Holman)

Attendance 4,000.

Yeovil:- Ridout; Hickman, Davis; Francis, Affleck, Collins; Gore, Marshall, Doyle, Mitcheson, Hartburn.

City Reserves:- J.Muirhead; T.B.Pearce, D.Staddon; Murray, Coles, Long; Granville, Fellowes, Holman, Vaughan, Challis.

The result of this match was rather unkind to the City Reserves, who although heavily defeated never gave up trying. Had their shooting been on the mark they would at least have made a game of it. Holman, although a thrustful and energetic leader, could not shake off the attentions of Affleck, the old Southampton centre half, and Exeter's most dangerous forward by far was Challis. Considering the conditions (there were several inches of snow, mud, and slush on the pitch) both sides put up a very good performance. The game was played in the most friendly and sportsmanlike manner and watched by a large crowd.

Yeovil's best forward was G.Marshall, who was transferred to them from Cardiff City about ten days ago.
