IPSWICH SCORE WINNING GOAL IN LAST MINUTE BREAKAWAY.

A MATCH THAT NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN LOST.

Saturday, March 22nd 1947.

IPSWICH TOWN 2 (Day, O'Mahoney) EXETER CITY 1 (Wright)
Half-time Ipswich 1 City 0.

Ipswich:- Burns; Bell, Rumbold; Perrett, O'Mahoney, Baird; Day, S.Parker, Chadwick, T. Parker, Little.
Exeter City: Hoyle; Thompson, Blood; Cutting, Hanford, Walker; Mustard, Wardle, Ebdon, Wright, Regan.

Attendance 12,000.

The odds were heavily in favour of the City beating Ipswich Town when with three minutes left for play and the score one all Mustard raced away clear of all opposition. He cut in to within eight yards of goal, steadied himself, and shot. He hit the ball with plenty of force and kept it low, but insufficiently wide of Burns. The goalkeeper went down to make a thrilling point-blank save of high class and the score remained at one all. The goalkeeper immediately made a long clearance to Little, who won a corner off Thompson. Little took the corner himself and his kick went straight across the penalty area to O'Mahoney, who met it on the volley. The ball hit the roof of the City net like lightning, and the Devon men were beaten in the last minute of a game they never ought to have lost. Exeter should have played their deferred match with Cardiff City at St James's Park last Wednesday, but they were notified by telegram from the Football League that the match was cancelled.

Friendly match at St James's Park.
