Exeter City went all to pieces after a promising start and 12,000 spectators at St James's Park saw the visiting side take the lead after twelve minutes, Sewell scoring after Hoyle had beaten out a point-blank drive by Fallon. The City's attack was again too slow and lacked thrust against the keen-tackling Notts defence. Towards the interval Exeter improved and Owen scored after Wardle had "sold the dummy" to the Notts defence. Owen also scored Exeter's second goal midway through the second half when he headed through a corner kick taken by Regan. But Notts had taken the lead for the second time five minutes after the interval when Hanford's hurried clearance rebounded off another player to Fallon, who cut in to the penalty area and beat Hoyle with a good shot from a narrow angle.
