The only Southern Section club which has scored neither a goal nor a point at St James's Park is Mansfield Town.

Their record in their three previous engagements there is:

  • Season 1931-32 lost 0 - 3.
  • Season 1936-37 lost 0 - 4.
  • Season 1937-38 lost 0 - 2
Considering that Mansfield have won only one of their twenty away matches this season it did not look likely that they would break the spell to-day. Yet of many favourable openings which came the way of the rivals at the Park today the majority fell to Mansfield. Carter was unlucky when he rattled the left hand upright during the first half with a crashing 20 yards shot. The ball rebounded into play and another Mansfield forward volleyed it over the bar. The only score of the match came after 32 minutes, headed by Walker with a perfectly timed effort from Regan's centre. Apart from Mansfield's ineptitude in finishing off their attacks the City owed a lot to Singleton's capable goalkeeping and Blood's reso lute defensive work. In the Exeter attack Ebdon and Wardle were well below their usual standard.
