City Shuffle in Vain 2 Down, Cutting Hurt No Punch
(By Nomad)
ENTERPRISE made all the difference at Aldershot, where the home side beat Exeter by two goals to nil. The winners were not a good side, but City, who were without Cutting for 20 minutes, could have won a poor game if they had exerted themselves. Twenty City supporters from Ottery St. Mary travelled by charabanc and gave the visiting team an enthusiastic reception, Fewer than 4.000 spectators saw the City win the toss and attack at the start A combined short-passing attack down the middle ended when Wright's back-heel was intercepted by Rowland. When the City raided again, Brinton came across and dispossessed Hutchings with a strong tackle Hanford got Exeter out of trouble by heading back to the waiting Singleton, but the home forwards were soon back again and Singleton had to fling himself across to turn a pole driver from Jayles around the upright.
REGAN GOES CLOSE
The corner kick was easily cleared and the City made rapid tracks for the Aldershot end where Regan taking over from Wright's accurate centre nearly scored. The winger's first-time shot completely deceived Reynolds, but the ball was a fraction too high. In another Aldershot attack the home forwards were dangerous in turn, and when Wright fastened an Regan's centre the home goal was seriously threatened, Unfortunately, there was too much finesse and not enough thrust when in shooting range, and Aldershot survived. A low centre from Regan went right across the goalmouth, but no City player was at hand to apply the finishing touch,
Exeter nearly scored on the left. hut Wright's shot was diverled for a corner, which Reynolds was lucky to clear at the second attempt. Exeter had certainly had their chances in the opening stages, but good approach work was not backed up by finishing ability. Easily the best effort of the match so far came when Owen back-heeled to Wright, whose drive from 15 yards landed on the top of the net.
