Biographical Text

Brown had been playing for Sussex non-league club, Portslade, when he was given a chance to join Brighton and Hove Albion in September 1958. He went on to feature in seven league matches and scored two goals.

When former Brighton player, Glen Wilson, took over as player-manager at Exeter City, and with the side struggling for goals, it was no surprise that he returned to his former club to sign Brown in January 1962.

He had been a player that Wilson had long wanted to sign for the Grecians, but unfortunately his stay at St James’ Park was not a particularly successful one.

He made his Exeter debut in a 4-3 home win over Stockport County and started well enough by netting the opening goal of the game.

Brown went on to only score twice more though for Exeter in matches against Crewe Alexandra and Bradford City respectively, in what proved to be a dismal season for the Grecians.

By the end of the 1961-62 season both Wilson and Brown had left the club, the latter signing for Dover and then Hastings United.

After football, Brown worked as a landscape gardener.

Alan died in Lewes on the 12th February 2016 at the age of 78.
