Though it was not until ten minutes from the finish that Exeter City scored the goals which brought them victory over Torquay United, the Grecians would have been unlucky to have lost this grimly contested Devon Derby at Plainmoor, where the crowd of 11,100 failed by 525 to beat the ground record set up when the City were there twenty years ago on the occasion of Torquay's inaugural match in the 3rd Division of the Football League. Today's game had three phases. For the first 20 minutes Exeter were the masters. They outplayed the United and were deserving of a goal when a shot by Evans hit the underside of the crossbar and rebounded into play with Joslin helpless. The remainder of a keen but not very scientific struggle in the first half ran in favour of Torquay. They continued in the ascendant until nearly three quarter time and merited the goal lead which Shaw gave them. Then they made the mistake of dropping back and gambling on a policy of vigorous defence. Once more Exeter stole the attacking honours, and Fallon nodded the equalising goal from Ebdon's centre. Three minutes later a low crossfield pass from Angus was seized upon by Ebdon, who took the ball forward and netted with a low oblique drive as Joslin came out to try to narrow the angle.
