Exeter City were nearly all that a team should not have been today at Newport. They were beaten by 3 - 0 because they were the inferior of two poor sides in one of the dullest 3rd Division games since the war. Exeter's forwards were sadly lacking in determination apart, that is, from Ebdon, a leader who waited in vain for the right sort of pass to come his way. Little attempt was made by most of the players to anticipate the run of play and move into an open space. The wingers doubled back again and again on their tracks and the inside men were content to operate in a semi half-back role for most of the afternoon. The few attempts to chase a loose ball came from Ebdon. He was both willing and conscientious, a lone raider who wandered out on to the wings on the off chance of accomplishing something worthwhile. Unfortunately Hoyle was at fault with Newport's first two goals, by Williams.
