Four fatal minutes brought about Exeter City's 2-0 defeat on the Ipswich ground. The defence held out grandly until Gibson lost his balance and possession of the ball in a shoulder charge with Jennings, who burst through and beat Singleton with a good shot taken in his full stride. Within another three minutes the City had another stroke of bad luck. Pole moved in and had a shot blocked at close range but the tall left winger stretched out his left leg and pushed the ball past Gibson. Before Gibson had a chance to recover T. Parker nipped in to shoot the second goal. Apart from this disastrous spell the City defence was in good fettle and presented a solid wall to the home attackers. Johnstone was brilliant and Stanley Rowe, the Buddle Estate former amateur, can look back with satisfaction on his debut.

  • Following the match at Portman Road, Angus Mackay, the reserve inside right of Ipswich Town and previously of Hamilton Academicals, signed for Exeter City. A substantial transfer fee was paid by Exeter City.
  • An old Exeter City favourite in Stan Barnes has returned to the fold from Gravesend. Barnes played in many games for the City Reserves in the years immediately preceding the war and was transferred in 1939 to Clapton Orient.
  • Exeter have also signed R. Boylin, an outside right from Dartmouth, on amateur forms.

DAZZLING PLAY AT EXETER

CHELTENHAM Town played the best football seen at Exeter this season, including Third Division games, when, at St. James's Park, on Wed- nesday night, they met and defeated Exeter Res. by 3-1 in a Southern League fixture.

Cheltenhamm were never in danger of defeat, and gave a brilliant display in all departments. The outstanding player on the field was Crowe, who, at inside left, controlled the ball like a master and opened up the game with accurately- placed passes to unmarked colleagues. Crowe was the bright star of a sparkling attack, in which George Tadman was a subtle schemer: Goring a dashing spearhead; Newman a thrustful right-winger; and Simpson, on the left-wing, who produced two of the Town's goals, although a cripple throughout the second-half, was one who was always just where he was wanted.

BACKS NOT EXTENDED

Behind the forwards Tovey, Whitney and Green-Titcomb did not turn out-were half- backs who showed to advantage, specially in attacking roles. The backs were rarely extended, making it difficult to assess their capabilities, and the only applicable comment is that neither Stoles, Adams, nor Bates, in goal, made a mis- take.

SIMPSON gave Cheltenham an early lead from Newman's centre, and GORING scored the second mid-way through the first half by hooking the ball past the advancing goal- keeper. Exeter reduced the lead when FALLON converted a penalty awarded for acciden- tal hands by Green.

GOAL BOMBARDED

And then Cheltenham took command, the incessant bom- bardment against Hoyle in goal ending in SIMPSON scoring with a first-time shot after the ball had re-bounded from the cross-bar.
