Saturday, September 20th 1947

EXETER CITY 0
SOUTHEND UNITED 0

League 3rd Division South, at St James's Park. Attendance 10,000.

City: Singleton; Thompson, Johnstone; Bartholomew, Gibson, Walker; Granville, Mackay, Ebdon, Wright, Vaughan.
Referee: Mr L.E.Gibbs, of Reading.
Southend: Hankey; Jackson, Bell; Goodyear, Montgomery, Pritchard; Bennett, Thompson, Dudley, Lane, Whitchurch.

The arrival of Angus Mackay should strengthen the City forward line. Signed from Ipswich after last Saturday's match the newcomer went straight into the first team and played a useful game on his debut. His play contained many subtle touches, his passing was thoughtful and neat, and he got up to the high balls well for a small man. Mackay, who is 22 years old, was born in Glasgow, and at 5ft 8ins in height and 10 stone in weight is a typical Scottish ball-playing type. of inside forward of the Jimmy Dunn mould. But while Mackay's inclusion led to an improvement in one position he could not be expected to galvanise the City's attack into a capable match-winning force at the first time of asking. Vaughan was pressed into service on the left wing because Regan and Fallon are both injured, but he looked uncomfortable there and missed an easy chance of scoring early in the game. Exeter's best scoring attempt came from Walker, who tested Hankey with a cannon-like drive from 20 yards out in the second half. Hankey had to move quickly, leaping to one side to tip the ball over the bar.
