Results do not always tell the true story of a team's ability. Two days ago the City played their best football of the season on the Queen's Park Rangers' ground, only to lose. Today at Nottingham the Grecians were overplayed by a powerful home side but managed to save a point against opponents who did everything but score in the second half. Singleton was the star of the game, making many brilliant saves, two at point-blank range from Evans and Cumner being particularly good. Johnstone and Thompson were a pair of unflinching defenders when the County were pressing continuously after the interval. Lyman scored for Notts in 7 minutes and Ebdon for Exeter in 22.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE.

Exeter City Reserves 1 (Fallon) Gravesend United 2. (Horrigan, Armitage)

At St James's Park, attendance 3,500.

An indirect free kick awarded for ungentlemanly conduct seven yards from goal enabled Gravesend to equalise after being in arrears for most of the first half in their Southern League game at Exeter. Roy tapped the ball a couple of feet to Horrigan. who slammed it into the net. With almost the last kick of the game Gravesend snatched victory. Armitage putting in a 15-yard low drive which bounced high over Hoyle's shoulder into goal. Exeter, whose goal was scored by Fallon, were better in defence than attack Gravesend, an energetic, determined side. had crafty inside forwards in Armitage and B. Hawkins. Butler was a wholehearted leader
