EXETER CITY 3  (Hutchings, Thompson, Regan)

SWANSEA TOWN 1 (ODriscoll)

Half-time City 1 Swansea 1
League 3rd Division South, at St James's Park. Attendance 12,000.

City: Singleton; Thompson, Johnstone; Bartholomew, Gibson, Walker;Hutchings, Mackay, Ebdon, Wright, Regan.
Referee:- Mr J.M.Wiltshire, Sherborne.
Swansea:- Parry; Feeney, Fisher;
Paul, Weston, Burns; O'Driscoll, McCrory, James, Eastham, Lockhart.

In the best match seen at Exeter this season the City deserved to win by virtue of their grand second half performance, but it was no easily obtained victory. Swansea Town, playing stylish and effective football, were as good a team as any seen at St James's Park since the war, but they failed because they lacked a sharpshooter. The City were not so tricky as Swansea but they had assets which the Welshmen did not possess. Exeter were determined, direct, and solid. They played good footballwithout attempting to be too clever and it paid a handsome dividend.
O'Driscoll opened the scoring for the Swans after twenty one minutes. Thompson did the unexpected when he levelled matters direct from an enormous free kick out on the touch-line nearly fifty yards from the Swansea goal. Hutchings and Mackay were prominent Exeter forwards in the second half, during which the winning goals were scored.

UNITED RESERVES WIN AT LAST

A goal scored at close range, by centre-forward Kelly, gave Torquay United Reserves the lead in the opening stages against Exeter City Reserves at Plainmoor. Although the standard of play was occasionally poor, the home team were on top. There were several changes in the City team, which lacked cohesion in defence and showed little initiative in attack. Barrie, former Hibernian goalkeeper, making his Plainmoor debut for the United, played well and revealed caution and resourcefulness. The pace mounted, with the United Reserves making quick raids on the Exeter goal. Two almost certain goals were missed by Markham in scrums around the visitors' goal. The City fought back and menaced the home goal towards the interval when the United Reserves were beginning to show signs of weakening.

Half-time:
Torquay Utd. Res 1-0 Exeter City Res

Although the United attacked without delay when the second half began the forwards missed several chances. The Exeter backs played steadily but repeated home raids had their reward when Hoyle, the Exeter goalkeeper, was dispossessed of a right wing shot and Kelly rushed in to score. Within seconds right-half Casley scored again. A penalty awarded the visitors saw Barrie save brilliantly, but Fallon scored with a second attempt. Barrie was injured in falling and was carried off.

Result:
Torquay Utd. Res. 3-1 Exeter City Res.

Exeter Team:- Hoyle; Coles, S.Rowe; Evans, Davey, W.Rowe; Granville, Grant, Smart, Sutherland, W.Fallon. At Plainmoor, attendance 2,000.

  • Exeter City have signed Roy Boylin of Dartmouth on professional forms,
  • and have also engaged Len Pickard, inside right, of Barnstaple, as an amateur.

Southern League Cup
EXETER CITY RES. 2 (Sutherland, Pickard)
TORQUAY UNITED RES.  2 (Kernick, Thomas)

Half-time Exeter 1 Torquay 0.
Southern League Cup-tie, at St James's Park.

Attendance 3,500.

City Reserves:- Hoyle; Coles, S.Rowe;
Cutting, Davey, Evans; Boylin, L.Pickard, Sutherland, Vaughan, W. Fallon.

Torquay Reserves:- Barrie; Keeton, Whitfield; McDonough, Cothliff, Kernick; Mercer, Jewell, Caseley, V.Jones, Thomas.

This Southern League cup-tie, the kick off of which was 5.15 p. m., was attended by a crowd of three and a half thousand people. The result was a draw, four goals being shared. Exeter Reserves had a greater share of the game but were countered by a solid defence in which Barrie, Torquay's new Scottish goalkeeper, Keeton, and Whitfield, were always reliable. A goal by Sutherland rewarded the City's persistence in the opening quarter of an hour and the lead was maintained until the interval. Torquay rearranged their attack in the second half, with Kernick changing places with Caseley, and the policy paid, for the visiting forwards frequently harassed the City defenders. Goals by Kernick and Thomas placed the Magpies in front, but Exeter rallied and drew level through Len Pickard, the Barnstaple amateur inside right. Pick of the Exeter team were Cutting and Evans. For Torquay V.Jones was a clever inside man and Thomas a dangerous winger.
