Exeter City beat Crystal Palace by two goals to nil and deserved to win by a wider margin, for they were so completely in command that only once did their goal seem likely to fall. That was when a shot from Russell at 25 yards range flashed a few inches over the bar. With a strong wind blowing across the field it was essential to keep the ball low. Exeter mastered this art much better than the Palace, who were a poor side judged by their past standards and their form in today's game. Angus Mackay has made a vast difference to the Exeter attack since his his transfer from Ipswich, and in this game he was the outstanding individualist on view. His craftsmanship was of the highest order,
passing intelligent, and his bewildering body swerve deceived the Palace defenders time after time.
