Exeter City's failure to beat Northampton was a disappointment to the big crowd at St James's Park. So was the way in which the game deteriorated into a scramble after a promising opening spell during which both sets of players had shown pace, skill, and cohesion. That the City gained no more than a division of the points was due to several missed chances in the first half hour. The foundations of victory ought to have been laid then, but at the time when the Cobblers' defence was uncertain and unsettled Exeter's forwards erred in marksmanship. Northampton's goal was scored by Garrett from a penalty for hands against Gibson. Exeter's equaliser by Fallon aroused a storm of protest from the Northampton team, claiming offside, but the referee would have none of it. He then rebuked Dennison for persistent arguing. Dennison earned further disapproval from the referee when he fouled Ebdon a few minutes later, and the Northampton team did not enhance their popularity with the crowd for indulging in time-wasting safety first tactics in the last quarter of an hour.

TRIBUTE TO SMART
Outstanding man in Exeter City Reserves' well-deserved away win over Guildford City was Smart, who scored all three of his team's goals, writes our Guildford correspondent. Thanks mainly to the dash with which he led the forwards, the home defence appeared shakler than in any other game this season.
After Exeter scored their third goal it appeared very long odds against Guildford recovering, but near the end they staged a rally which almost won them a point. Forcing a series of quick corners, they scored from one of them and seemed likely to get another goal The visiting defence remained sound however, and before the whistle the Exeter forwards were again on the attack. After Smart, Exeter's best forward was Dymond. Coles and Davie were the pick of the defenders.
