The City's victory at Brighton was their eighth match since being defeated. Although the margin was narrow they were seldom in danger of losing a point after Hanlon had failed to convert a penalty kick in the 22nd minute. The Brighton outside left walked nonchalantly towards the ball and then shot slowly and a yard wide of Singleton's right hand upright. It was one of the worst penalty efforts ever seen on the Goldstone ground in the opinion of the local spectators. Yet it was no worse than a glaring miss by Hutchings for Exeter five minutes afterwards. The City's right winger charged down an attempted clearance, beat the opposing half-back and dribbled round Baldwin. Left with an absolutely empty net in front of him and time to have walked the ball into it he blazed away and drove yards wide. Mackay was also guilty of a bad miss from an easy position. Both these players afterwards atoned for their misdemeanours, it so happened, Hutchings by providing the centre which enabled Smart to score the City's goal and Mackay by his thoughtful distribution of the ball and opening up attacks which should have been put to better use.
