Though Exeter City defeated Watford with two goals to spare their performance was variable. Purple patches during which the Grecians dictated the play alternated with colourless phases when they were utterly out of touch. A mercurial team, Exeter won as comfortably as the score suggests, but they were aided in this fluctuating contest by the opposition's lapses. To emphasise the point there were two glaring misses by Surtees who with the goal at his mercy blazed high and wide of the net. Watford apart from their goalkeeper were also unsteady in defence. The backs positioned themselves too squarely while Lunn was quite the poorest centre half seen at Exeter this season. On the other hand Gibson, the City pivot, was the best player on the field. Exeter's backs, with Thompson returning to his brightest form, were dependable, and a lot steadier under pressure than the Watford pair. Regan and Ebdon scored for Exeter in the first half, and after the interval Thompson converted a penalty awarded against Lunn for a handling offence. Davies, the only Watford forward to shine, scored for the visitors in the last few seconds of the match.

RESERVES' POINT
City Reserves were full value for their point at Chelmsford and would have won a keen game but for the brilliance of Glen, the home team's goalkeeper. Exeter's attack was quicker on the ball, and Bill Fallon was the best winger on view. He and Vaughan worked well together. while Sutherland, scorer of both City goals was ever ready to take his opportunities
Granville (deputizing for Jeffery, who was called home to attend his mother's funeral) and Evans were accomplished wing half-backs, but the star of the City's middle line was Davey a player who will go places on this showing. Chelmsford scored first through Duncan. Sutherland's brace put Exeter in front. Duncan netted again 15 minutes from time.
Exeter City Team:- Hoyle; Coles, S.Rowe; Granville, Davey, Evans; R.Boylin, Dymond, Sutherland, Vaughan, W. Fallon.
