A sensation was caused by Northampton, who on the eve of their Cup tie at Exeter transferred Archie Garrett, their centre-forward and leading goalscorer, to Birmingham in exchange for a fee of £10,000. His deputy was Briscoe, who joined the Cobblers with Garrett in a joint transfer from Heart of Midlothian just over a year ago. These players were also team-mates at Preston North End before the war. Exactly five weeks ago Northampton and Exeter played a drawn match for League points at St James's Park, each side scoring once. The result of today's cup-tie between these evenly matched rivals was the same, 1-1. Under the new rule brought into force this season for F.A.Cup-ties an extra half hour was played without addition to the score.

Exeter missed a grand opportunity of winning at the first time of asking, when with home advantage they allowed too many chances to be squandered in the first half and again during the extra half hour. The second half was a different story to the first, for heartened by their earlier escapes and with Jones in brilliant form some fine football was played by the Cobblers, and it was no surprise when the scoring was opened by Roberts, who headed Lowery's centre into the net. With only three minutes left Bartholomew equalised with a free kick from fully 35 yards, the ball sailing into the top of the net past the surprised Northampton goalkeeper.

Southern League
Bath City v Exeter City Res.

Exeter City Reserves beat Bath City at Twerton Park in a Southern League match by 4 goals (Sutherland 3, Vaughan) to nil.

Bath City played a disappointing game at 'Twerton losing 4-0 to Exeter City Reserves. Sutherland scored after 17 minues, and Vaughan in- creased the lead before half-time Bath City fought hard to reduce the arrears, but they had little chance. In the second-half Bath City had a little more of the play, but the visi- tors scored twice through Sutherland.

The Exeter team was Hoyle; Coles, Rowe; Evans, Davey, Jeffrey; Boylin, Dymond, Sutherland, Vaughan, and W. Fallon.
